When was the last time you picked up a pencil or a paintbrush and just created something? If your answer is, “I can’t even draw a stick figure,” then this post is for you.
Spoiler alert: you absolutely can be an artist, no matter your age or experience level.
Here’s the thing—art isn’t about perfection or natural-born talent. It’s about expressing yourself, exploring new ideas, and letting go of the belief that you have to be “good” at something to enjoy it. In the studio, we believe in Process Art - that is - the process of creating is more important than the final product. What did you learn? What did you improve in your skill set? Did you find a new way to use the medium? These questions are far more important than, "Does this look good?"
Take one of my students, for example. Let’s call her Lorraine. She walked into the studio for her first class with zero confidence. “I’ve never painted before,” she said, “and I’ll probably be terrible at it.” Fast forward two hours, and Lorraine was holding up her finished piece—a vibrant, textured botanical that she couldn’t stop smiling at. She was so proud of what she’d created. Since her first class, Lorraine attended many more classes - sometimes alone and sometimes with friends - and always with a smile on her face.
Art is like learning to ride a bike. Sure, you might wobble or fall a few times at first, but with a little guidance (that’s where I come in!) and a willingness to try, you’ll be amazed at what you can achieve. The best part? You don’t have to do it alone.
At the Dragonfly Art Studio, I’ve seen kids and adults of all ages discover the joy of painting, drawing, and experimenting with new mediums. Some come in thinking they “can’t” create, and they leave realizing they absolutely can. That’s the magic of art—it’s as much about the process as the finished product.
So if you’ve ever caught yourself saying, “I’m not creative,” or “I could never do that,” I challenge you to prove yourself wrong. Sign up for a beginner class and see what happens or join in at Open Studio to try a new medium.
If the idea of joining in programming isn't where you're currently at, that's okay. You can create at home (following a studio tutorial or using a weekly prompt if you need guidance). You don’t need fancy supplies or years of practice—just an open mind and a willingness to play.
Remember, art is for everyone. That includes you. Let’s create something beautiful together.
